Our History

Since its founding, the Halle has served as a central gathering place for parish and school meetings, community events, socials, and celebrations of all kinds.
✦ Introduction ✦

St. Joseph's Society

St. Joseph’s Society has been an integral part of St. Mary’s Parish in Fredericksburg, Texas since its establishment in February 1899 by Fr. Joseph Roch. From its earliest days, the Society was formed to serve as a place where the men of the parish could gather, support one another, and strengthen their shared faith and community life.

Recognizing the need for a dedicated gathering space, Fr. Roch set out to build what would become the historic St. Joseph’s Halle. Completed and dedicated in 1900, the Halle was constructed through the dedication, labor, and contributions of parish members. It stands today as a lasting memorial to that early commitment and vision.

Founding & Early Development

The organization, also known as the Verein, was officially chartered with the Texas Secretary of State on September 11, 1896. The vision behind its creation came from Fr. Joseph Roch, who sought to provide the men of St. Mary’s Parish with a place they could call their own.

When meeting space was limited during the construction of the Parish Holy Family Center, the society adapted by holding 340 Parish related events in a single year (2010-2011) —demonstrating a deep commitment to community gathering, hospitality, and service.
The men of the parish ultimately dedicated the completed Halle in 1901 after building it themselves using their talents and resources.
